I have always been fascinated with the absurd, with things that are disregarded and considered crude. I've found myself down many unexpected paths, but I never thought I would find myself knee-deep in pond scum. Often dismissed as nothing more than an unsightly byproduct of stagnation, scum withholds an extraordinary world inside it. It is a flourishing microcosm, home to a complex world of microorganisms and ecosystems that the naked eye cannot grasp.

In the development of this process, I found this living architecture that was ever present in the realm of scum. Utilizing the cyanotype process, I was able to capture this horizontal sectioning of the water, revealing the beautiful tendrils of scum in a pungent ecosystem.

Human><Nature–led by Sine Lindholm and Richard Joon Yoo–diverged from traditional architecture education, emphasizing nature as the ultimate mentor in fostering interconnectedness and coexistence. The studio emphasized hands-on research, by directly engaging with the environment to bridge the dynamic form of the environment with the often static nature of the built environment. By fostering a symbiotic relationship between architectural practice and the natural world, the studio embodied an attunement to the biological rhythms and systems of the natural world, forging a future of an architecture in harmony with the natural world.
